Electronic Lockers vs Smart Lockers for the Office: What Is the Difference?

By Marta Cano

Electronic lockers and smart lockers get used interchangeably, but for an IT or facilities team choosing one for the office, the difference is the whole point. One secures a compartment. The other manages your assets. Here is how to tell them apart and pick the right one.

What is an electronic locker?

An electronic locker replaces the key with a PIN, card or app. It is a better lock: convenient and keyless, but it still only controls access to a box. It does not know what is inside, who should have it, or whether it came back.

What is a smart locker?

A smart locker is networked and integrated. It assigns bays to specific requests, tracks the items inside, records every collection and return, and reports on usage across your estate. It manages assets, not just doors.

The difference that matters for IT

  • Asset visibility. Electronic lockers store; smart lockers track. Only one gives you an audit trail.
  • Workflow. Smart lockers connect to your service desk so the request and the handover are one process.
  • Accountability. Every transaction maps to a person and a ticket, which electronic-only lockers cannot do.

Which should the office choose?

For coats and personal storage, an electronic locker is fine. For IT equipment - laptops, peripherals, loan devices and returns - you want a smart locker system. If those assets need to stay accountable, an IT asset locker that updates ServiceNow automatically is the right tool.
